Days & Hours of Service :

On-the-job training is usually 40 hours per week; additionally, the apprentice attends school (absenteeism & tardiness is not accepted).

Minimum Requirements for Participation :

The applicants must be eighteen (18) years old and have a High School Diploma or GED, provide a birth certificate and DD-214 if applicable.

Those accepted begin an apprenticeship that runs five (5) years. The apprentice begins with on-the-job training and must attend school to learn all trade-related theory and welding. Schooling is mandatory for three nights a week from September through April. Two nights are theory related and one night is welding. After being a licensed apprentice for three (3) years and completing three-hundred (300) hours of class work the apprentice can take the licensed Journeyman Exam. Pay rate starts at 40% of Journeyman rate with a 10% increase each of the five (5) years. Health & Welfare benefits start after 60 days, Annuity in the 4th year of the program.

College Credit for Apprentices :

The Apprentice Registration system allows Apprentices to be registered with Washtenaw Community College (WCC). Once registered they can receive college credit that can be used for one of WCC's two associate degrees. For more information, check out their web site: Washtenaw Community College.
